Germany In Recession; China Output Down

Germany has fallen into recession and China's industry output growth waned to its weakest in seven years, data showed on Thursday, reinforcing evidence the financial crisis is plunging the world into a painful downturn.

The news, the latest in a litany of bad economic data, helped send markets in Europe and Asia sharply lower on Thursday.


Unemployment Rate Reaches 7-Year High

The number of new people seeking unemployment benefits jumped to the highest rate since the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday.
