Whats Next for Dj Soul Sister?
In addition to my weekly right on party situations that I throw, I am gearing up for some big parties like the return of my “Revolution Thriller: Prince vs. Michael” party, plus Chocolate Kitty IV, another Right On 80s Party, and so many other parties with fun themes, people and dancing. I’m really excited to be playing at Jazz Fest this year, opening for my hero Chuck Brown, the godfather of the DC go-go sound. And I’m honored to have just been asked to play again at Essence Fest for all 3 nights on the main stage, just like I did last year. I want to do more writing and artist oral history-type projects. That’s one of the things that keeps me going, is not only enjoying music, but wanting to learn and teach about the history and stories behind the music and the musicians. I’m probably going to bring back my Wednesday night “mellow mid-week affair” sets. And I’ve always wanted to do more to give back to my community. I already have arranged to have proceeds donated from the sale of the “DJ Soul Sister for President” t-shirts (DirtyCoast.com) donated to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. And I am planning to host and present a huge benefit party which will help a local charity that I believe in. As they say, details TBA.
Have a favorite record that everyone needs to hear?
“Music is the Message” by Kool in the Gang. That’s my favorite record of all time, the one that started it all off for me when I was about 6 years old. I can’t tell you how much I love that album.
What are some of the most important artist that we all should get to know?
James Brown. There are so many others, but JB is the one that no one should ever take for granted. I’m also a huge fan of Teena Marie and Roy Ayers.
Whats your motto for life?
Hmmm. I’m going to go with a title of one of the songs on Kool & the Gang’s “Music is the Message” -- “Love the Life you Live.” And there’s a title of an album by Crown Heights Affair – “Do it Your Way.”
Why are you so cool?
LOL – I’m not cool at all. I am a big ole nerd. For God’s sake, I collect records and talk about the quality of headphones and turntable cartridges. I can recite all of the year releases, album titles and personnel for most P-Funk records. And I represent for the underdog and the underground, all of the nonconformists that do their own thing. This is why I throw my own parties. Contrary to popular belief, I rarely get hired for any gigs. I promote and throw my own events, the type of parties that I want to be at. Promoters are scared to death of me (LOL) cause I do my own thing. I’m just blessed that my events have been successful. You know, to thine self be true and then good things will come to you. Besides, cool people are too cool to dance and party down. Calling only party people to the “right on party situations,” please. I don’t care what you call yourself, “cool,” “nerd,” “hipster,” whatever - just know that when you come to my set come ready to get down, vibe out and do it to it.
