Min We Blk History Month Special-Maggie Lena Walker

In 1903, the world was presented with the first black woman bank president, Maggie Lena Walker. She founded the Saint Luke Penny Savings Bank in Virginia, which survived the Depression and is still in existence. She helped many realize the importance of savings and financing their own homes as well as urging women to get a education. She also played major role in the creation of the Virginia Lily-Black Republican Party. In 1902 she founded The St.Luke Herald, which dealt with the concerns of blacks. To say she was the daughter of a former slave washerwoman, she became one of the wealthiest black women of the 20th century.
