Sue Bailey Thurman was the first black woman to ever get an audience with human rights leader Mahatma Ghandi. She discussed with Ghandi non violence resistance in the struggle for political freedom and social change. She also helped with creating the first Integrated Church in the United States. Thurman was the first black student to be awarded the bachelor's degree in music degree by Oberlin Conservatory (1926).
