The Month of Feb has been honored as the month of romance, all in the name of Saint Valentine, all in the name of love. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we really celebrate this day? There are a couple legends in regard and the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints all bearing the name Valentine or Valentinus and all of whom were martyred.
One legend offers that Valentine was a priest who served during Third Century Rome. When the Emperor of that time decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and children, he banned marriage for the potential soldiers. Valentine realized the injustice, defied the emperor and continued to secretly perform marriages for the young lovers.Once the Emperor found out, Valentine was ordered to his death.
Another suggestion is that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape Roman prisons where they were often brutally tortured and beaten. It is also said that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" to his beloved while he was in prison. He allegedly wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine', an expression that is still used to this day.
Although the truth behind Valentines legend is not especially clear, the stories certainly mold him as a sympathetic, heroism and most importantly romantic figure.
During the Middle Ages France and England it was commonly believed that the
middle of February was the beginning of the birds' mating season, which added to the idea that Valentine's Day should be a day of romance.
However it came about, Valentines Day is one that we will continue to cherish and honor in the name of LOVE. Indeed love should have a special day, but certainly recognized everyday in every life in every measure.
