Min We Blk History Month Special-Adam Clayton Powell Jr.


One of the most flamboyant and controversial politicians of the 20th century can only be credited to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. In 1944 he was elected to Congress from Harlem, becoming the first black member of the House of Representatives from the East. For ten years him and one other were the only black in congress. In 1963 Powell became the first black chair of the Education and Labor Committee. Although in 67 he was stripped of his title due to allegations of misconduct, but he received his title back in 69. Powell has a long and controversial career. He also became a pastor in 1933 at Abyssinian Church, once his father retired.
