Muddy Waters by PaigeWrite

The simple story telling songs accompanied by acoustic guitar and harmonica, the old juke joint packed to capacity on a hot sweaty,sticky,summers night... the foot tapping, body moving sounds of a Blues fills the air. Take yourself there...
One known as "the Father of Chicago Blues" McKinley Morganfield; better known as Muddy Waters spent 30 years of his life producing what are deeply respected as some of "the best blues songs ever." just to name a few... "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Mannish Boy", and "I Want to be Loved".

Officially Born April 14,1913 near a river called Deep Creak, although Waters altered his age to 1915 to appear younger to the music industry.Waters spent most of his young life in the Creek where he grew up, playing in the dirty waters, is how he became fondly known as Muddy Waters.

Water's sound was basically a blend of Country Delta Blues electrified; But the sound that seemed so simple was not, the use of microtones in his vocals and slide playing, made duplicating...extremely difficult.

Water's life on this earth ended on April 30,1983; but his music lives on. He was ranked #17 in in the 2004 Rolling Stones' list of the 100 greatest artist of all time. In addition, he is actually the Father of blues musician Big Bill Morganfield, allowing his legacy to live on through his son.

Muddy Waters, filled his purpose, served his destiny and left behind a legacy. Remember him...remember his music.

King Cake Recipe

Ingredients

1/2 cup warm water (110 to 115 degrees)
2 packages active dry yeast
1/2 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar
3 1/2 - 4 1/2 cups flour unsifted
1 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon lemon zest, this is lemon rind, grated
1/2 cup warm milk
5 egg yolks
1 stick butter cut into slices and softened, plus 2 tablespoons more softened butter
1 egg slightly beaten with 1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1" plastic baby doll

Directions

Pour the warm water into a small shallow bowl, and sprinkle yeast and 2 teaspoons sugar into it. Allow the yeast and sugar to rest for three minutes then mix thoroughly. Set bowl in a warm place for ten minutes, or until yeast bubbles up and mixture almost doubles in volume. Combine 3 1/2 cups of flour, remaining sugar, nutmeg and salt, and sift into a large mixing bowl. Stir in lemon zest. Separate center of mixture to form a hole and pour in yeast mixture and milk. Add egg yolks and, using a wooden spoon, slowly combine dry ingredients into the yeast/milk mixture. When mixture is smooth, beat in 8 tablespoons butter (1 tablespoon at a time) and continue to beat 2 minutes, or until dough can be formed into a medium-soft ball.

Place ball of dough on a lightly floured surface and knead like bread. While kneading, sprinkle up to 1 cup more of flour (1 tablespoon at a time) over the dough. When dough is no longer sticky, knead 10 minutes more until shiny and elastic.

Using a pastry brush, coat the inside of a large bowl evenly with one tablespoon softened butter. Place dough ball in the bowl and rotate until the entire surface is buttered. Cover bowl with a moderately thick kitchen towel and place in a draft-free spot for about 1 1/2 hours, or until the dough doubles in volume. Using a pastry brush, coat a large baking sheet with one tablespoon of butter and set aside.

Remove dough from bowl and place on lightly floured surface. Using your fist, punch dough down forcefully. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top, pat and shake dough into a cylinder. Twist dough to form a curled cylinder and loop cylinder onto the buttered baking sheet. Pinch the ends together to complete the circle. Cover dough with towel and set it in draft-free spot for 45 minutes, or until the circle of dough doubles in volume. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.

Brush top and sides of cake with egg wash and bake on middle rack of oven for 25 to 35 minutes until golden brown. Place cake on wire rack to cool. If desired, you can hide the plastic baby in the cake at this time.

Colored sugars
Green, purple, & yellow paste
12 tablespoons sugar

Squeeze a dot of green paste in palm of hand. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons sugar over the paste and rub together quickly. Place this mixture on wax paper and wash hands to remove color. Repeat process for other 2 colors. Place aside.

Icing
3 cups confectioners sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
3 - 6 tablespoons water

Combine sugar, lemon juice and 3 tablespoons water until smooth. If icing is too stiff, add more water until spreadable. Spread icing over top of cake. Immediately sprinkle the colored sugars in individual rows consisting of about 2 rows of green, p urple and yellow.

Cake is served in 2" - 3" pieces.

Mardi Gras

You know I couldn't let the day go by without putting up a little info about my hometown New Orleans favorite holiday Mardi Gras. Parades,Costumes,Gowns,Beads, Coconuts, Music, Food, and fun, what more can you ask for from a Holiday :-).

Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through its French heritage in 1699. Early explorers celebrated this French Holiday on the banks of the Mississippi River. Throughout the years, Orleanians have added to the celebration by establishing krewes (organizations) which host parades and balls. Carnival quickly became an exciting holiday for both children and adults.

Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" and of course is celebrated on that day of the week. The date can fall between February 3 and March 9 depending on the Lunar calendar, used by the Catholic Church to determine the date of Easter. Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.

The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors were chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following:

* Purple represents justice
* green stands for faith
* gold stands for power

The Mardi Gras season begins on January 6 and continues until Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.

Make a Shoebox Float

I use to loveeeeeee making these floats!!! Make yours for Tuesday Mardi Gras!!!

Supplies:

* 1 Shoebox
* Green tissue paper or aluminum foil
* Scotch tape / Stapler
* Doubloons
* Mardi Gras Beads
* Glitter
* 1 Jester Doll

The first step is picking a shoebox. Usually whatever is hanging around
your house that isn't holding bills or other random junk will work. Oh, and
by the way, it will need to have a lid.

Now it is time to put your thinking cap on (remember that?) and create a
theme for your float. Some suggestions would be "Barbie goes to
Hollywood!", or "Poseidon's Undersea Adventure", and of course, "Goin' to
the Mardi Gras!" Your chosen theme will dictate how your float looks, and
the materials you will need.

Take your box and cover both parts (the lid and the base) with the colored
tissue paper or aluminum foil. You don't need to cover the inside of the box with
paper, only the outsides and the bottom. Now, flip the box over and attach
the lid to one side of the box using the stapler or, if there is a parent
around, a hot glue gun is a fantastic tool. (See picture if this seems
confusing.)

Now you are ready to decorate! You can write your theme on the side of the
box in glitter, build a "seat" for your rider, or hang ribbons off the
sides- be as creative as you can be! Find that old dollhouse furniture,
jazz it up, and stick it on the float, too. The options here are as endless
as your imagination! Have fun!

DJ Soul Sister Right On Interview Part Two

Whats Next for Dj Soul Sister?

In addition to my weekly right on party situations that I throw, I am gearing up for some big parties like the return of my “Revolution Thriller: Prince vs. Michael” party, plus Chocolate Kitty IV, another Right On 80s Party, and so many other parties with fun themes, people and dancing. I’m really excited to be playing at Jazz Fest this year, opening for my hero Chuck Brown, the godfather of the DC go-go sound. And I’m honored to have just been asked to play again at Essence Fest for all 3 nights on the main stage, just like I did last year. I want to do more writing and artist oral history-type projects. That’s one of the things that keeps me going, is not only enjoying music, but wanting to learn and teach about the history and stories behind the music and the musicians. I’m probably going to bring back my Wednesday night “mellow mid-week affair” sets. And I’ve always wanted to do more to give back to my community. I already have arranged to have proceeds donated from the sale of the “DJ Soul Sister for President” t-shirts (DirtyCoast.com) donated to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. And I am planning to host and present a huge benefit party which will help a local charity that I believe in. As they say, details TBA.

Have a favorite record that everyone needs to hear?

“Music is the Message” by Kool in the Gang. That’s my favorite record of all time, the one that started it all off for me when I was about 6 years old. I can’t tell you how much I love that album.

What are some of the most important artist that we all should get to know?

James Brown. There are so many others, but JB is the one that no one should ever take for granted. I’m also a huge fan of Teena Marie and Roy Ayers.

Whats your motto for life?

Hmmm. I’m going to go with a title of one of the songs on Kool & the Gang’s “Music is the Message” -- “Love the Life you Live.” And there’s a title of an album by Crown Heights Affair – “Do it Your Way.”

Why are you so cool?

LOL – I’m not cool at all. I am a big ole nerd. For God’s sake, I collect records and talk about the quality of headphones and turntable cartridges. I can recite all of the year releases, album titles and personnel for most P-Funk records. And I represent for the underdog and the underground, all of the nonconformists that do their own thing. This is why I throw my own parties. Contrary to popular belief, I rarely get hired for any gigs. I promote and throw my own events, the type of parties that I want to be at. Promoters are scared to death of me (LOL) cause I do my own thing. I’m just blessed that my events have been successful. You know, to thine self be true and then good things will come to you. Besides, cool people are too cool to dance and party down. Calling only party people to the “right on party situations,” please. I don’t care what you call yourself, “cool,” “nerd,” “hipster,” whatever - just know that when you come to my set come ready to get down, vibe out and do it to it.

Min We Blk History Month Special-Leon Howard Sullivan

The first major black sponsored shopping center, Progress Plaza, in Philadelphia was developed by Leon Howard Sullivan in 1968. This center was built through funds of his investment group. He later established the first black-owned aero-space supply agency, Progress Aerospace Enterprises. In addition to his business savvy Sullivan was a Baptist Minister in Philadelphia for over 38 years of his life. Later in life many noticed his business knowledge and success and in 1971 he became the first black to sit on the GM board. He also was the first black coin-box operator for Bell Telephone Company while he spent a couple of years in New York.

DJ Soul Sister Right On Interview Part One

I had a chance to ask One Right On Sister Some Questions.... None other than Famed New Orleans Soul DJ.......DJ SOUL SISTER

A little Background

DJ Soul Sister has been on the scene since 94 sharing positive soul vibrations with New Orleans and the world with all the classic old school funk, groove, disco, and soul you can handle. In addition to creating Right On Party Situations to make us all dance, she is the host of Soul Power on WWOZ 90.7FM in New Orleans (Sat.8-10pm CST). Besides the Parties and the Radio, you probably have been blessed to see her rocking the crowds at Essence, Voodoo, Jazz Fest, and probably anything else you can imagine. This is one DJ I can honestly say always provides a positive vibe type of environment.

The Interview

How did you get the name DJ Soul Sister?

I gave myself the name “Soul Sister” when I started my Soul Power show on WWOZ about 14 years ago. I thought Me-li-ssa just sounded awkward on the air, and I was a bit shy about using my real name. It comes from my show’s theme song “Bold Soul Sister” by Ike & Tina Turner (1970), which I first heard on WWOZ through show host Nita Ketner. I put the “DJ” behind it when I started doing lots more live performances, especially at Tipitina’s which was in late 2003.

How did you get started in DJing and any advice for folks wanting to break in this area?

The answer for this question is way too long and has too many different parts that anyone would be patient enough to sit through! I’ve always considered myself more of a crate digger and record collector, party promoter, and “DJ artist” than a standard for-hire type dj. I don’t take requests and I don’t play anything that I don’t like, cause I don’t buy anything I don’t like. I play only vinyl. I do my thing cause it’s fun and because I want to do things a little differently. I guess my advice for anyone wanting to break into any area is to only do what you love, cause when you do what you love it’s never work. Maintain positive relationships because you can’t do it all by yourself. I would not be doing anything if it weren’t for people who have supported me through all the years. Be true to yourself. I’ve loved the music I play and collecting records since I was a young kid. I saw Spinderella (Salt-N-Pepa’s dj) on an episode of Yo! MTV Raps when I was in 8th grade and I wanted to be her. It’s harder as a woman to break into a scene that is dominated by men. I had no mentors or teachers. I had to teach myself. But if it’s something you love, then you will do it by any means necessary. I never cared that men gave me wild looks when I went to buy DJ gear or do my crate digging. That’s some real advice too for anyone wanting to do anything. Do you, be good to people, and keep going despite what anyone else says. As we’ve seen through the example from President Obama and so many before him, anything and everything is possible if you believe in yourself. My last piece of advice is to take yourself seriously if you want other people to take you seriously. Work harder than anyone else. But, then again, it brings me back to my first point. If you do what you love, it’s never work.

Why So much love for the soul?

My goal is to always spread positive soulful vibrations through the music that has given me joy for so many years. I use my sets to honor the musicians, singers and artists who have come before us and have shared their gifts for the world to enjoy. And I only play the sounds that move me, so anything you hear in one of my sets or at one of my party promotions is guaranteed, as the song goes, to be real.

When I use “Soul” in Soul Sister, the “soul” refers to the vibe, the warmth, the joy and the energy of the music I am playing or of the event that I am throwing. Anyone who has seen me knows that I am not really a soul dj, per se. I play soulful sounds – that can be anything from funky jazz to Afrobeat to soulful true school hip hop. I’m more on the funk side, the underground disco side. I spin vinyl in the “disco style,” but my turntables have to be set up in the “hip hop style.” My style is part funk, part soul, part disco, part hip hop, part punk rock and all on the one for fun.

Clipse

I just love Pusha T and Malice who make up the Phenomenal group Clipse. I couldn't go through February without putting up some music from one of my favorite groups of all time. Im hoping for a album from them this year!!!

Facts about Weight Related Issues

Get Informed. No matter your size just be healthy with it, is what I say.

Considerable evidence suggests that overweight and obesity are associated with significantly increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, certain forms of cancer, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. Previously, obesity experts concentrated on total body fat as the main predictor of weight-related disease. Now, location of fatty tissue is thought to be equally if not more important than total body fat. Specifically, excessive body fat stored around the stomach and abdomen is a key risk factor for weight-related disease.[i] The risks of many medical complications grow with increasing body mass index and abdominal obesity:

* Almost 90 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.[ii] In addition, in one large study of more than 27,000 people, those in the highest 10 percent of waist circumference were 20 times more likely to get type 2 diabetes than those in the lowest 10 percent of waist circumference[iii]
o Research shows that even small amounts of weight loss in the range of 5-10 percent can prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes among high-risk adults[iv]
* In the Framingham Offspring Study, obesity was responsible for 78 percent of cases of hypertension in men and 64 percent in women[v]
* High waist circumference has been shown to increase risk of death by 35 percent compared to normal waist circumference[vi]
* The well-known Nurses Health Study of more than 44,000 women found high waist circumference resulted in a two-fold increase in coronary heart disease[vii]
* Overweight and obesity are clearly associated with increased risks for certain types of cancer, including kidney, endometrial, colorectal and postmenopausal breast cancer[viii]
* The prevalence of obesity and overweight has dramatically increased over the past 25 years, moving from 46 percent of the population during 1976-80 to 64 percent in 1999-2000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Health and Nutrition Survey[ix]
* A study in the journal Health Affairs, noted that per person healthcare spending for obese adults is 56 percent higher than for normal-weight adults. Over 15 years, the additional costs incurred by obese adults with private health insurance versus normal-weight adults increased from $272 to $1,244 per person per year[x]
* A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that obese employees file twice as many workers' compensation claims, have seven times higher medical costs, and 13 times more lost work days than their non-obese counterparts11
* Obesity is also the prime culprit behind the recent sharp increases in Medicare spending. The number of obese Medicare recipients nearly doubled between 1987 and 2002 and the cost of treating them almost tripled12

Valentines Day-By PaigeWrite

The Month of Feb has been honored as the month of romance, all in the name of Saint Valentine, all in the name of love. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we really celebrate this day?There are a couple legends in regard and the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints all bearing the name Valentine or Valentinus and all of whom were martyred.

One legend offers that Valentine was a priest who served during Third Century Rome. When the Emperor of that time decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and children, he banned marriage for the potential soldiers. Valentine realized the injustice, defied the emperor and continued to secretly perform marriages for the young lovers.Once the Emperor found out, Valentine was ordered to his death.

Another suggestion is that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape Roman prisons where they were often brutally tortured and beaten.It is also said that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" to his beloved while he was in prison. He allegedly wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine', an expression that is still used to this day.

Although the truth behind Valentines legend is not especially clear, the stories certainly mold him as a sympathetic, heroism and most importantly romantic figure.

During the Middle Ages France and England it was commonly believed that the
middle of February was the beginning of the birds' mating season, which added to the idea that Valentine's Day should be a day of romance.

However it came about, Valentines Day is one that we will continue to cherish and honor in the name of LOVE. Indeed love should have a special day, but certainly recognized everyday in every life in every measure.

I personally have 4 pairs of Foamposites and I don't have one complaint about them. I promise you will not be disappointed.

SUPERWOMAN STORIES: Jennifer Culkin

SUPERWOMAN STORIES: Jennifer Culkin

by Tamara Kaye Sellman, See Jane Write!

At a time when American culture suffers a deficit of heroes, I'm glad to see a "local girl does good" story that mirrors the Obama campaign's optimistic mantra, "Yes we can."

Let me tell you about Jennifer Culkin. She's a working mom: a critical care nurse of 3 decades, with many of those years spent working scary 24-hour MEDEVAC shifts (don't ask her how many colleagues she's lost in copter crashes) or saving the lives of newborns whose life force can barely be measured in ounces. She's also an avid cyclist and published author.

Oh, and did I mention she's also got multiple sclerosis?

Jennifer's life story, A Final Arc of Sky, will be released April 2009 and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a book to inspire you to everyday acts of heroism. She leads us through a weave of family- and work-related dramas, while also offering an honest discussion about living with a chronic illness which has literally left her bedridden for weeks at a time. The landscapes of her life—Boston, San Francisco, Alaska, and Seattle—are rendered with authenticity, and her writing is gorgeous, smart and unflinching. Yes, you'll be reading a bit about the dead, the sick, and the dying, but you'll also capture true-to-life glimpses of what it means to saturate yourself in the universe of a critical care professional and yet emerge from it filled with vitality, wisdom, and a sense of humor. Readers will appreciate the humane lens through which Jennifer captures the moments of what we can all agree should be the definition of an everyday hero's life.

Of course, Jennifer would never cop to that, but isn't humility one of the finest qualities befitting any superwoman?

Buy The Book

Can you tell me a little about your book?
Sole Food is a collection of stories, essays and poetry dedicated to sneaker culture and identification within the culture. I had a lot of fun doing it and it is riddled with references to my favorite author (William Faulkner) and my favorite pieces of literature and specific shoes. (at times)

Where can it be purchased?

Sole Food may be purchased online at Amazon, Barnes and Nobel, booksamillion and target.com soon it will be available in select sneaker and skate boutiques.

When did your love for sneakers get started?
My love for the kicks started pretty early. I remember asking my mother for a pair of Nikes when I was in first grade. I told her that they made you run fast. She presented me with a pair of white Nike blazers with an electric blue swoosh.

What made you decide to write a book?
I had been planning/wanting to do one for a while. I read Crystal Ellis’ Character Flaws in 2004 and got motivated. After reading Garcia’s “Where’d you get those?” It was a wrap! The seeds for Sole Food had been planted.

About how many sneakers do you own? The actual answer is in the book, but let’s just says that I could go at least 2.5 years without wearing the same pair twice.
